The Origins of Mixed Taste
In 2004, in a real estate development in the suburbs of Denver, I launched a lecture program pairing unrelated speakers in the same night, with question and answer of both at the same time. The program, Mixed Taste, initiated a new institution called The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar (The Lab).
The Purpose of Mixed Taste
Mixed Taste aims to disable the pretensions surrounding discussions of art and ideas, while enabling a high level of conversation to take place.
Pairing topics arbitrarily forces new connections and associations between them.
Mixed Taste in 2004
Presented in an unleased retail space in the Belmar development, there were only a few visitors the first few weeks.
In the years that followed, Mixed Taste had to move into increasingly larger spaces to accommodate its growing audience.
Mixed Taste at The Lab
Over 200 people each week would attend Mixed Taste in The Lab at Belmar's new facility, until The Lab merged with MCA Denver in 2009.
